Crossfields of Arnside were leading builders of Morecambe Bay Prawners and Yachts from the 1840s to 1940s.
The first Crossfield moved to Arnside at the start of the nineteenth century. Members of the family also set up boatyards in Conwy and Hoylake.
The Arnside boatyard continued in business as Crossfields Successors until 1985.
Arnside is situated at the top of Morecambe Bay, on the Kent Estuary south of Kendal, in sylvan surroundings.
The village developed as a small, select resort after the coming of the railway, and Crossfields played a major role in this development.
There are several Crossfields boats still in existence including Bonita (1888), Spray (1896) – owned by the Morecambe Bay Prawner Trust, and Severn (1912) owned by Arnside Sailing Club.
